Julia,
I wanted to quickly let you know: We just got back from the latest round of the secretive TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) trade negotiations in Ottawa. And this massive corporate power grab has never been so close to defeat.
Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper moved the talks at the last minute and tried to keep the location secret, in an attempt to stop the public from challenging this dangerous deal. But with the help of thousands of generous SumOfUs supporters, we didn’t let them stop us -- we travelled to Canada’s capital and delivered our message right to their secretive meeting place.
Tons of people -- from grandmothers singing songs to 4-year-olds like Una -- showed up to deliver our 500,000-strong petition against the TPP directly to the Canadian government.
Our huge signs saying “Secret Talks Happening Here”, our placards and our flyers were all across the city, and all through the negotiators’ hotel. Insiders told us that as the talks happened, negotiators watched our protest from their windows. As the sun beat down on us, and the press covered our event across the country, we felt powerful. We knew thattogether, we can stop this corporate power grab.
Check out this short video we put together:
The event attracted lots of extra attention to the secret talks. Representatives from all the major TV stations showed up, and we got tons of press including in the Ottawa Citizen, Metro News, and CBC TV.
A Canadian opposition MP accepted our petitions -- nearly 100,000 signatures from Canadians, and 540,901 from across the planet -- and he promised to deliver them directly to the Prime Minister when Parliament resumes in September.
We heard from people inside the talks that as negotiators met behind closed doors to decide the fate of our laws, they watched our protest from their windows. Others had copies of our flyers. They heard our message loud and clear -- and together we made sure that negotiators knew what the stakes were for negotiating this deal. This is massive.
That night, we checked into the hotel where negotiators were staying and while they slept and under huge security presence, we put flyers under the doors of negotiators letting them know what is at stake if this deal gets passed.
Across the world, SumOfUs members are working to stop trade deals. Already 540,901 people and counting have signed petitions against the TPP, including 150,000 in Australia alone. Movements are building to oppose the TPP around the world. In Japan, activists paid for ad space in the Washington Post to warn American citizens about the problems with the trade pact, and in New Zealand, thousands of people marched to show all the parties seeking election this year that they didn’t want the TPP to go ahead. In the USA, SumOfUs and our allies helped lead a public campaign that stopped Congress from approving “Fast Track” legislation, which would have let Obama sign the country up to TPP without any accountability.
Our impact is growing by the day. It’s inspiring to be a part of this work with our community -- and this is just the beginning of what we’re going to do together. Just like the message on our flyer said, we’re not going to stop until we stop this deal. And together, we can stop this deal.
If you can chip in $10 to help our community keep campaigning to stop the TPP, then please do.
Thanks for making this happen and for all that you do.
Onwards,
Paul, Hannah, Ledys, Emma and the rest of the team
P.S. You really should watch that video reportback. It’s great.
SumOfUs is a worldwide movement of people like you, working together to hold corporations accountable for their actions and forge a new, sustainable path for our global economy. Please help keep SumOfUs strong by chipping in $3.
